For those of you that never heard of the Dismal Swamp, here is a little bit of history for you: Over 200 years ago it was proposed to make a channel to transport by water-carriage goods from the Albemarle Sound into the Elizabeth Rivers. In 1793 construction began on both ends of the Dismal Swamp Canal which had to be dug by hand by slaves hired from nearby landowners. The canal opened up in 1805, 12 years after it was begun. It is the oldest operating artificial waterway in the United States. The "Halfway House" was built at the site of the state line between Virginia and North Carolina. There are two locks at each end, the north end lets water into the canal and the south end lets the water out. Here is a picture of how far the water
drops. This is a picture of us coming out the other side of the lock. We anchored in the Alligator River, way back where there is nothing but swamp and no where to walk Skipper but he didn't care because he said it was way too dark and much too cold to go potty, I'll wait for morning!! and he really didn't mind the wait because he just slept and slept and we thought it was really late and were going to sleep and it was only 7:47. Oh well, kin see, can't see, that's the sailing way of life.
