WE left Hampton at 7 Am with light winds and freezing temps 44 feels like 38. As we got into the Elizabeth River the winds picked up a bit and we were actually able to sail. A Coast Guard boat advised us to stay 500 feet away as they were escorting a submarine back to the base, it is that small thing in the back of this picture. Arrived in North Carolina at 1:20 and continued on into the Deep Creek Lock of the Dismal Swamp at 2:45, this picture is the house where the lock tender stays during the day waiting for boats to come through.
Robert, the lock tender we usually see wasn't working today. If you look you can see the front lawn is filled with conch shells that people bring him back from the Keys (one of them is mine).
There is Michael holding the line while the lock fills with water.
Here is the sign telling how many miles to go to get where your going. The ride down the dismal was very calm, the trees blocked all the wind that everyone was experiencing. Arrived at the next bat 3ridge at 3:30 and the lock tender, who is also the bridge tender, let us through to tie up to the wall for the night so we'd be first into the lock in the morning (8:30). A pleasant French couple they tied up behind us, don't speak much English so they kind of stayed to themselves. The town has 2 gas stations, one fast food and 2 Church's, a one street town. Very quiet. Watched a few DVD's from Netflix and were asleep by 9.
